Global Energy Group nets Nigg contract

Global Energy Group (GE) has been lined up for a staging port contract with a new client, DEME Offshore, for use of the Port of Nigg for the
Moray East offshore wind farm development. The contract is estimated to worth £10 to £12 million with GE to provide the services of the Port for receipt of completed jacket foundations.

Acquired by GE in October 2011, the Port of Nigg is one of the largest port facilities in the Moray Firth, with some of the largest construction and assembly shops in Europe. The facility features a dry dock and over 900m of deepwater quayside.

Since taking over the site, GEG has invested £90 million into the port with £50 million spent on port infrastructure including the new south quay and £40 million on heavy plant and equipment such as cranes and low loaders (SPMT’s), to handle the large offshore wind structures and increase loading capacity. GEG also recently announced a further planned £10-£15 million investment, designed to expand quayside availability and adjacent yard space.

Global now have great experience in this work and this will further establish the Port of Nigg’s position as an important staging port supporting the offshore wind industry. DEME Offshore secured an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) contract for
Moray East back in 2017. The EPCI contract covered the foundations procurement and installation offshore, using its DP3 equipped new build offshore installation vessel Orionwhich is expected to enter service by the end of the year.

Commenting, Marcel Sunier, Project Director for Moray East said: “The selection of Nigg as the staging port for the massive ‘jackets’ – the oil-rig-like foundations on which the turbines and offshore substations will be installed comes after extensive engagement with the local supply chain and capitalises on the strengths of a history of offshore engineering.

“Using Nigg for jackets complements our previous announcement of the Port of Cromarty Firth as an intermediate port for turbines. The installation of subsea substructures from Nigg combined with the installation of turbines from Invergordon shows how a complete onshore cluster to deliver the offshore works has been established in Easter Ross.

“I am delighted that Moray East is part of the facilitation of major investment plans (projected at over GBP100m across both ports) making Moray Firth facilities attractive and competitive for future developments as the offshore wind industry matures."

Moray East wind farm will feature 100 MHI Vestas V164-9.5 MW turbines as well as three offshore substations. The generated power will be transmitted to the grid via three subsea export cable circuits to the landfall location at Inverboyndie bay on the Aberdeenshire coast. The onshore export cables continue underground to the Moray East substation currently under construction near New Deer.

The 950 MW project is being developed by Moray Offshore Windfarm East Ltd (MOWEL), which is a joint venture company owned by Diamond Green Limited (33.4%), EDPR (33.3 %), ENGIE (23.3%) and CTG (10%). The project secured a Contract for Difference of £57.50/MWh from the UK Government in 2017 and is due to start generating power in 2021.

In March 2018, the Port of Nigg embarked on its first staging port/renewables hub contract for Siemens, the turbine supplier for SSE’s
Beatrice offshore wind farm, Scotland’s first large scale and the UK’s deepest water offshore power generation project. The Beatrice offshore installation and construction operations has now been completed and Siemens is in the process of departing the site at Nigg, ready for the ports next staging and marshalling contract to commence in late 2019 or early 2020.
