ABP helps bridge the gap: safe transit of Gull Wing Project component

Associated British Ports (ABP) oversaw the safe transit of the first bridge section for the Gull Wing Bridge Project at its Port of Lowestoft.

With favourable weather conditions, expert ABP pilots safely navigated the barge which was carrying the 380-tonne steel section called Nav 1 into the inner harbour.

Tom Duit, Operations Manager at ABP Lowestoft said: “Due to the size and weight of the component in question, following a special navigational risk assessment, ABP deployed three pilots to navigate the barge’s safe transit into the inner harbour at the Port of Lowestoft.

The bridge section will now be off-loaded onto the quayside before being moved across Commercial Road to a purpose build platform on Network Rail land. This is an exciting development for the Gull Wing Project and we expect to see further parts arrive at Lowestoft throughout the year. ABP is proud to support this development which will be a catalyst for investment in the region.”
