In September 2020, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) designated Akito as one of four suitable to serve offshore wind projects, under both the Port and HarbourAct and the General Sea Act, during the construction and operations phases. Port selection was based on a number of criteria including the number of proposed wind farms in the vicinity, the required vessel size for both the transportation and installation of components, and the areas require to store and assemble WTGs.
